Mostly because the US federal government was already handling more money than any group of humans is fit to.
I would be far more comfortable with government health care implemented at the state instead of federal level.
Most of my concerns about the US federal government would be resolved by moving its power / control / money handling to the state level.

Citizens: In general, do you find the US federal government embarrassing?
If "Yes" above, do you think it's wise to put them in charge of more money?
Granted, I'm starting to wonder who doesn't think of congress as a joke. I'm expecting CNN to start offering pay per view wrestling matches of congressional sessions...
At the federal level, once something stops being political it tends to be run reasonably and equitably if not the most efficiently. From what I've seen, if we could have health care that ran as poorly as medicare, it would still be far better than the average healthcare plan and less costly. The fact that our oldest (and presumably most expensive) 12% of our population which is covered by medicare are costing us less than 20% of healthcare spending (I really need better data for these numbers because I was using population graphs and spending graphs and integrating the numbers in my head but I tried to be conservative) seems to me to be a fairly good deal. I really wish the whole of the population could have service that good for that price.
