Your Race Affects Whether People Write You Back
Once again the interpretations are infuriating (sexual preference = racism), but the numbers are interesting.
Once again the interpretations are infuriating (sexual preference = racism), but the numbers are interesting.
Lets see here:
Property 1: Based on logic in any way?
Sexual preferences: Nope.
Racist preferences: Nope.
Property 2: Influenced by upbringing, societal programming, and other factors not under the individuals control?
Sexual preferences: Pretty darned likely.
Racist Preferences: Yep.
Property 3: Can be overcome by analytical thinking, therapy (talk, exposure, etc)
Racist Preferences: It happens occasionally.
Sexual preferences: Fat chance.
(Hmm. could sexual preference be *worse* than racism?)
Just some food for thought here, don't jump to any deep conclusions.
Definitions by which sexual preference can be considered racism:
Racism:
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
No.
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
Prejudice:
2 a (1) : preconceived judgment or opinion (2) : an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge b : an instance of such judgment or opinion c : an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics
No.
Descrimination:
1 a : the act of discriminating b : the process by which two stimuli differing in some aspect are responded to differently
Yes.
3 a : the act, practice, or an instance of discriminating categorically rather than individually b : prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment
No.
So the only set of definitions for which sexual preference which varies statistically significantly by race qualifies as racism is the one comparing two individual stimuli - two individual people. And I would say the definitions involving entire categories of people (races) are the ones that are generally intended with the use of the word "racism".
Your use of the word "worse" is interesting. I feel very strongly that sexual preferences, as all feelings, cannot be bad, only the actions one takes based on them.
